Signs That Your Vehicle's Oil Needs To Be Changed
- Dark oil on your dipstick. It means your oil is too dirty to protect your engine properly.
- Grinding or tapping noises. These could be sounds of metal hitting or rubbing on metal, meaning your oil level is dangerously low.
- Oil leaks. Any fluid leak should be looked at ASAP. Often they can be fixed easily. But an unchecked oil leak could lead to serious engine damage.
Start by checking your owner’s manual. Recommended intervals have changed over the years, with newer cars able to go, on average, more kilometres between changes than older models. Newer cars also often have a dashboard reminder light that takes into account your actual driving conditions as well as your mileage. If it comes on it’s best to heed it, even if it’s before the interval recommended in your owner’s manual.
